The Purtrex filter is made up of blown micro fibers that are thermally bonded together to form a very strong and durable filter which can last much longer than other types of filters, namely string wound filters that are made of individual fibers and are bonded together with the help of resins or binders. To make compatibility problems a thing of the past, Purtrex depth filters are made only of one single material; no binders or resins, just 100% polypropylene.

Polypropylene filters are fully compliant with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) title 21 of The Federal Regulation Code 174.5 and 177.1520 (as certified by Osmonics in the case of Purtrex depth filters). This means you can use these filters in a very wide range of applications, including food and beverage, electronics, RO reverse osmosis water filtration, fine chemicals, metal finishing, etc.

Any filter's lifetime can basically be expressed as the length of time that the filter will function properly. If the pressure differential reaches 40 psid (2.8 bar), the filter reaches the end of its lifetime. Any more excessive pressure drop causes the filter to become inefficient and particles might get released into the filtrate. For Prtrex filters, its lifespan is exactly up to the point that the pressure reaches 40 psid (2.8 bar). Other filters like string wound filters may be more inconsistent in their performance and their lifespan could end at varying pressures.

Because of the advanced structure of the filter itself, more porous on the outside and the fibers coming closer and denser together towards the core of the filter, you can filter out bigger particles first, and finer particles at the very last filtration stage. This means that there is no possibility of the filter getting clogged from the outside, while the inside of the filter has not yet used its full dirt holding capacity. Overall this means the lifespan of the filter becomes much longer than it otherwise would have been.

You may have had trouble in the past, trying to get rid of old filters that have seen the end of their days. But because with Purtrex depth filters you are absolutely sure what material you are dealing with, you can very easily compact or incinerate them if they are used beyond their capacity. Another pitfall people had to deal with, using other types of filters, is very poor labeling or identification of the various filters being used in their water treatment system. Whenever you want to change an old filter, you do not want to count any strings, or try and remember which particular model of filter you installed in each and every part of your filtration system. Instead, what you want is a filter that clearly tells you which model it is, so all you have to do is find the corresponding replacement and replace it.
