Buna-N FDA Grade O-Ring For Slim Housings
Nitrile (a.k.a. NBR or Buna-N) rubber is one of the most common type of seal material in the world. The Nitrile functionality (carbon triple-bonded to nitrogen) provides resistance to oils and fuels.
A Nitrile is an organic chemical that contains a cyano functional group (subunit), CN^-, in which the carbon and nitrogen atoms have a triple bond i.e. C≡N^-. The general chemical formula of a Nitrile is RCN, where R is the organic group.
Nitriles can be thought of as organic cyanides, although they are ordinarily much less toxic than simple cyanide salts such as sodium or potassium cyanide (NaCN or KCN).
Successful seal performance requires careful consideration of process conditions, properties and seal design. A deficiency in any one of these areas will result in a reduction of seal service life. If a seal failure does occur, a systematic approach may be taken to determine the root cause of the failure.
Causes of Seal Failure can be: Chemical attack, Thermal attack, Process pressure, Mechanical failure, Seal design - Groove dimensions or O-ring size.
Standard Nitrile is mostly mentioned together with Buna-N. It provides excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, water and alcohols. Nitrile also has good resistance to acids and bases, except those with a strong oxidizing effect. Avoid highly polar solvents (Acetone, MEK, etc.) and direct exposure to ozone and sunlight.
