Fresh water

Fresh water (also freshwater or fresh-water) is water that contains only minimal quantities of dissolved salts, especially sodium chloride, thus distinguishing it from sea water or brackish water. All freshwater ultimately comes from precipitation of atmospheric water vapor, reaching inland lakes, rivers, and groundwater bodies directly, or after melting of snow or ice.

Access to fresh water is a critical issue for the survival of many species, especially in desert areas.

Even on a ship or island, there can be a "water shortage", which means a shortage of fresh water.

For fish, it strongly matters how much dissolved sodium chloride the water they live in has. Most species cannot live in both fresh water and salt water, though some species move between the two. Salt water fish have access to an abundance of salt, and try to get as much salt out of their body as possible, while trying to keep the water.

Facts about Freshwater:

– About 70% of the earth is covered in water.

– The total amount of water in the world is approximately 1.4 billion km3, of which 97.5% is saltwater and 2.5% is fresh water. Expressed another way, if all the earth's water were stored in a 5-litre container, available fresh water would not quite fill a teaspoon.

– Of the 35 million km3 of freshwater on earth, about 24.4 million km3 are locked up in the form of glacial ice, permafrost, or permanent snow. Groundwater and soil moisture account for 10.7 million km3. Freshwater lakes and marshlands hold about 0.1 million km3. Rivers, the most visible form of fresh water account for 0.002 million km3 or about less than 0.01% of all forms of fresh water.

– The major source of fresh water is evaporation off the surface of the oceans, approximately 505 000 km3 a year. Another 72 000 km3 evaporates from land surfaces annually. Approximately 80% of all precipitation (about 458 000 km3) falls on the oceans, the remaining 20% (119 000 km3) falls over land. The difference between precipitation onto land surfaces and evaporation from those surfaces is runoff and groundwater recharge – approximately 47 000 km3 per year.

– Brazil is the country with the most renewable fresh water. Canada is third after Russia.

– Although 60% of the world's population live in Asia, the continent has only 36% of the world's water resources.

– Water stress begins when there is less than 1 700 m3 of water per person per year for all major functions (domestic, industrial, agricultural, and natural ecosystems) and becomes severe when there is less than 1 000 m3 per person.

– Currently, 600 million people face water scarcity. Depending on future rates of population growth, between 2.7 billion and 3.2 billion people may be living in either water-scarce or water-stressed conditions by 2025.

– The world's wetland area was halved during the 20th century. In some locations wetlands are worth as much as $20 000 per hectare (0.01 km2).

– Up to 60% of the human body is water – the brain is composed of 70% water, blood is 82% water, and the lungs are nearly 90% water.

– Currently, on a global basis, 69% of all water withdrawn for human use on an annual basis is soaked up by agriculture (mostly in the form of irrigation); industry accounts for 23% and domestic use (household, drinking water, sanitation) accounts for about 8%. These global averages vary a great deal between regions. In Africa, for instance, agriculture consumes 88% of all water withdrawn for human use, while domestic use accounts for 7% and industry for 5%. In Europe, most water is used in industry (54%), while agriculture and domestic use take 33% and 13% respectively.

– The current average North American diet requires over 1 800 m3 of water per person per year from both natural rainfall and irrigation; the diet of an average African living in the sub-Saharan region is produced with less than 650 m3 of water per person per year.

– Per capita residential use rates in North America (about 350 litres per person per day) and Europe (about 200 litres per person per day) are high compared to countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where it is 10 to 20 litres per person per day.

– Half of the world's population still suffers with water services inferior to those available to the ancient Greeks and Romans.

– Worldwide, at least 20% of the 10, 000 freshwater fish species are now endangered, threatened with extinction, or are already extinct.
